For those not familiar with accounting, the job of budgeting officer congers up images of navigating a maze of cubicles only to find surly people who tell you to do more with less. But, that is the world of “Dilbert” and Guy Milinski is a real accountant who works in a regular old office and is actually quite nice.
The Gay Lesbian and Supporting Sailors (GLASS), a newly official organization aboard Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL), held its first official meeting on Feb. 13.
Each honor graduate and award winner will receive the commanding officer’s commemorative coin in recognition of their superlative achievements during recruit training. The honor graduates for Feb. 17 recruit review graduation are as follows:
Recently, 19 individuals completed extensive training to become members of the Great Lakes Naval Security Force (NSF). The group included four civilians and 15 military Auxiliary Security Force (ASF) personnel. The training included small arms handgun safety, communication skills, security fundamentals, IEDs, watchstanding, personnel inspection, individual search/handcuffing, vehicle inspection, rapid gate access, “active-shooter” training, and courtroom security.
Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes has selected Naval Military Training Instructor (NMTI), GM1(SW) Christopher D. Ragland Instructor of the Quarter, 4th Qtr. 2011 in an announcement made on Feb. 10.
To mark Military Saves Week, to be held from Feb. 19 to 26, the Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) will offer a Million Dollar Sailor course on, Feb. 22 and 23 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Bldg. 26. The course teaches sailors how to develop good financial habits, how to become savvy consumers, and how to save and invest to become future “million dollar sailors.”
The USO of Illinois is the beneficiary of a paddle tennis marathon, that has been held each February for the past five years at the Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Ill. The club’s “Paddle Platoon” raised $11,000 for the USO at its event on Feb. 4 and close to $55,000 during the past six years.
Sailors and students from Training Support Center (TSC) and Learning Sites, Great Lakes volunteered at John Milton Gregory School to tutor and mentor fourth and fifth graders on Feb. 4.
A sailor assigned to Naval Reserve Assault Craft Unit One aboard Naval Station Great Lakes owns a Chesapeake Bay retriever that will compete in the 135th annual Westminster Dog Show at Madison Square Garden in New York Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 13 and 14.

On Feb. 7, Training Support Center (TSC), announced ETSN Jacob Darrell Lawless as Student of the Month (SOM) for January 2012.
The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears were represented by wide receiver Donald Driver and starting center Roberto Garza at the 13th Super Bowl Tailgate lunch, sponsored by Goodwill Industries, at Galley 535 on Tuesday, Jan. 31.
Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) announced Jan. 30 that Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes sailor, FC1(SW/AW) William D. Stanford II is their choice for Sailor of the Year 2011. 
Vice Adm. S. R. Van Buskirk, Chief of Naval Personnel announced on Jan. 30 that the Great Lakes Chapter of the Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) took top honors as Shore Chapter of the Year for 2011.
